Stripped oil drain plug
#1
Well my 95 Kodiak that is in such great shape has a flaw. The oil drain bolt was stripped and I made it worse w/ a 19mm socket. Any suggestions to get this thing off?? I took the skid plate off and will try needle nose vice grips tonight. I'm going to get a new plug ($9.99), if I ever get it off. Guess the former owner over torqued it but at least he changed the oil. Any suggestions appreciated...

JHAM,, if its the same plug as most Yamaha's have it's easy to mess up.If its the one that I think it is ,,,the plug itself is quite a bit bigger than the hex head,,they are real sob's for being hared to take out even with the right size wrench when they are overtightened,,,grab a hammer and a blunt cold chisel,,, lightly tap the plug around the outside edge,,then start the chisel into the edge of the plug aand try to loosen it up on the threads,,,once it starts to turn it'll probably turn out by hand,,just don't get real crazy with the hammer and you should be all right.

If you can get to the plug I'd use a dremal tool with a hd cutoff wheel and cut a slot into it like a normal screw would have. Then use the largest blade screw driver you can find along with the vise grips to create an "L" and torque that sucker out. I used to do this when I worked at Jiffy Lube in college. Works like a charm. Don't go crazy with the dremal tool.

dakotart,
Lot of good ideas here, but if the plug hasn't loosened & no oil is leaking out, I have a way easier alternative; just leave the plug as is, get yourself an oil vacuum & vacuum the oil out thru the filler. You'll not only solve the immediate problem, but you'll never have to deal with the mess of an oil change again, especially when you have skid plates to deal with. I have been using a Pela vacuum for a couple of years now, and I can change my oil in all my quads with my Sunday clothes on.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I finally got it off with the old fashioned hammer and screw driver method. I was glad to see the spring and strainer were there as some people don't put them back in. Your right about the 6-pt. socket on that bolt though.
