Default Timberwolf 250

I'm looking at a used 96 Timberwolf 250 that needs (big surprise) a rear end. I have been looking all over the net and keep seeing the same things: The rearends always break, it's from mudding and not keeping an eye on the fluid, and the parts from Yamaha are $400 for the ring and pinion, plus $150 in bearings. Rearends for these things seem to be in short supply cause they always break. My question is this: is there another rearend that will work? maybe one from a Bayou or something? There are Bayous laying around everywhere junked, but every time you find a junked Timberwolf someone's already cannibalized the rearend.
Ideas?
