Default 06 Wolverine 450 Limp Mode?

I bought a used 450 Wolverine for one of my kids - Know the guy I bought it from and it wasn't 'Beat'. Has been running real good until today.

all of a sudden it Won't go over 8 mph and the engine sounds like its up against a rev limiter - kinda like 'Limp Mode' that my Kawi 650 Brute has when the belt light comes on.

Nothing in the OM about it. I could smell burnt rubber after a short ride so I took the belt cover off to check. other than some dry mud (the previous owner LOVES mud) Nothing seems ripped / frayed / wet.!? There is no switch for a belt light like on my Kawi

Did some searching here but came up empty - Where should I look next - I'm stumped!

Thanks in advance

When you say dry mud, are you saying their is mud on the sheave faces and the belt and also where the rollers are (behind cam plate) If so you need to take everything apart and clean it up and re grease the roller ramps with a tablespoon of grease for each roller. If there is mud in there the rollers are probably hung up and are not working properly, also the grease could be contaminated from mud. If it's not that I believe the 06 has the over ride switch and sometimes if a lot of water gets into it, it can get all funky or go bad. Take it apart and clean inside and see if that helps. There is also a limiter built into the CDI but to check that you would need to do a rev limiter override which essentially is tapping into the green and white striped wire and grounded it to bypass it. Check Grizzhopper.com for directions on how to do it. Last there is a speed sensor (sits right by the green/white striped wire) behind the cover by your oil check/fill and you can see if that's the cause.

Since you say there is mud in the clutch housing I would think that would be your issue though but could be one of the other things mentioned also.

Thanks for the reply - the 'mud' in the housing was very minimal. It was really old, just dust that used to be wet. Like I said, up until the other day it ran strong
I went to the Yami shop and asked the service guy (who I know personally) and he bet his money on the speed sensor - gonna fax me the test procedure to see if its screwed.
Also mentioned that Wolverine carbs have a vent tube that falls off easy and lets gunk into the carb. Suggested cleaning it. It sounds like a rev limiter to me but I'll look at all the options.
I'll get busy trying to figure it out
I really appreciate your help!!
