I got stuck in the snow pretty good, put it into reverse and tried to back out. The quad pulled hard for 3 seconds and then stalled. I started it up and the same thing happened again. After getting it out I went to a flat piece of road and put it into reverse and it did the same thing, 3 seconds/stall. Sometimes it would not stall all the way out and I would get another 3 seconds before the stall. I put it on the work stand and it did it again. The stall feels like the ignition was turned off for a second and then turned back on.

I had a Honda 300 and the reverse had a governor on it but acted totally different. Does the Raptor have a reverse limiter or something like that?

Please let me know if you have had similar problems or a soulition.

Thanks

sounds like a loose connection somewhere or an issue with the float.

Mine does the exact same thing when I try backing out of a snow drift. Goes, powers out, pops, and goes again. Every 5 secs or so. But only in reverse. I do need a valve adjust, but I don't think thats *all* of my problem.

According to the 2001 yamaha tech update manual the raptor is equipt with a rev limiter for reverse this allows you to back up, up to 12mph then it will stall the motor until it drops below 12 miles per hour. After you get below 12 mph the motor will run like normal. This rev limiter will stall the motor for aprox. 2 seconds before returning to normal then 2second of acceleration the 2 seconds of miss and so forth.

not sure if that is accurate... or at least I have not experienced it yet. I know i have had mine over 12mph (yes it did scare the crap outa me) in reverse messing around one day... it never stalled or anything.... maybe it doesn't work on mine..... who knows..

yes it is the rev. limiter.
spinning in reverse in snow 12 mph comes very fast
also 12 mph in reverse is very fast on hard ground

Seems like I read somewhere that the early Raptors did not have the rev limiter installed on them where the later ones did. I don't know this for sure but maybe someone can verify this.

I think that true about the earlier ones. The mechanic that I took it to get the valves adjusted was amazed how fast reverse is and he was probaly doing about 20 mph if not more. Reverse is close to 2nd gear.

I don't think so. Mine is an early one. September 2000, frome number 000994 (99something at least under 1000). It was the first one in North Dakota. But it still has the limiter. Plus, 12 MPH in reverse feels like 30, so it's hard to judge how fast you are going.
