Default 86 moto4 250 weak starter???

hi all.
I just bought this atv for my wife as a fixer upper. It starts ok if I use a 100 amp booster at the starter but it wont turn fast enough to start the atv if i use a car battery and cables . I've cleaned and lubed the bearings brushes ect and the starter turns fine off the motor but same result afterwards.

how can i check engine to see if it turns freely ? This motor has no recoil or kick starter. I really dont want open the motor...

thanks for your sugjestions

Get a manual for it, best money ever spent.
Try tradebit.com or ebay
My moto 4 80 acted the same, new battery, plugs, checked valve lash, rebuilt piston and cylinder, tuned carb etc. Got it running good but always hard to start cold.
Finally checked ohm reading on coil against manual and both the coil and the stator coils were off what the manual said in the ohm readings.
Replaced the coils for $55 and starts like new.
Buy yourself a $6 spark gap tester. Your spark should jump around a 1/2" gap
These go in the plug wire cap and conect to the spark plug so you can watch the spark while running the engine. Mine would only jump a 1/8" gap and the coils where the problem. On a 20 plus year old bike the ohm readings should be checked to verify the coils are in spec.

I has a 86 or 87 250 Moto4 the one with the low range option. Mine did have a pull start option thought. Mine was like yours and turned slow, I gave the starter to a shop who rebuilds starters and it worked great after that, but I never asked what he did to it sorry.
