Default sub trans problem?

I have a moto-4 225 (not sure the year). I don't know much about the wheeler, the person I got it from couldn't tell me anything about it either. The wheeler ran and drove when I got it,but it was a pain in the butt to get in and out of reverse. I thought the lever had three positions (it acts like foreword, neutral, and reverse), but today I learned that it may be hi, low, and reverse. I'm not sure if it could be a clutch problem or sub-trans problem. Or maybe the engine didn't have enough power. I took the motor to the local atv shop to be rebuilt and will have it back in a two days. Will update if that changes anything, but any ideas or information will be appreciated. Thanks.

Can,t remember my 250 moto4 very well, but my 350 Moto 4 1988 would not go into reverse.Turned out it was just a cable connected to the foot brake that goes to a sensor came off. The sensor would not allow the ATV to go into reverse unless the foot brake was held down.
