Unless the guy is selling it for a price that I can make money on parting it out on ebay I would not touch it.

How can you diagnose a shifting issue on a ATV thats not even running? The only thing you can test out is if the neutral works on a dead ATV.

Before you worry about a down shifting sound ,I would worry about why it does not start and go down the road on its own power first.

boy says the starter went out on it then pull rope broke and it was parked. looked at it today and the shift lever is loose on the shaft. im wondering if that may be the cause of the grinding cuz the lever hits the floorboard when goin down and its prob not lettin it downshift right

i bought it and got it running. tightened the shifter but that wasnt the problem. it runs fine and upshifts fine. downshifts fine when slow but when downshifting from higher speed it makes a sort of knockin noise like a roulette wheel. sounds like its trying to go into the gear but not quite there. if i blip the throttle it goes into gear

figured it out. the linkage from the forward reverse shifter wasnt putting it all the way into forward. tiightened up the slack and it shifts great now.

I have the same problem, im pretty sure its a problem with the gears in the transmission. Like a broken tooth
