Default Oil change on Kodiak 400

Hi. I have a 2003 Kodiak 400. I just did an oil change and when transfer the used oil from the catch-pan to a container I found a screen with a spring around it. Where does it go? I seems like it must have been under the oil drain plug but it doesn't make sense to me that it would be there. See linked image. Thx.

I don't know if the image is linked correctly. Here's the URL for it.

Thanks. Good to know that's where it came from. It's still unclear why it's there, particularly the screen part (#13). I don't know what part #12 is but it didn't fall out when #13 & #14 came out. I've already filled the engine with fresh oil. I hope the parts can wait until the next oil change to be put back in.
Thanks again.

It is the sump strainer, oil has to pass through it before going through the oil pump. It stops large bits of swarf, gasket goo etc damaging the pump. I would sit the quad on it's backside, remove the plug and fit the strainer and spring, fairly sure oil won't come out but it depends on how far back the plug is on your model.

I was hoping to avoid putting it back in now but I guess better safe than sorry. Thanks for the further info.

Maybe part #12 just stayed in place and did not fall out.

Just drain it out, put the part in then fill it up again. It will be a long time before you change it again so fix it now.
