Do you guys have any problems with the heat shield coming off of the airbox, and if so how did you fix it? I think that my problem is from my differential fluid coming out of the vent hose and breaking down the adhesive. And then when I wash my Wolv it starts to peel off. How do I fix the differential fluid problem and why is it doing that in the first place. I never had a problem until I changed the bearings in the rear end did I put something together wrong or something. I did not change the bearings in the actual differential just on the outside where the seals are. Should I change the bearing in the differential too? Any information would be greatly appriciated.

Jcsact,

Hey Guy I would love to help you out or find out as much info as I could for you but I don't know if it is me reading your post right or not because i dont understand what you are trying to say at all. I have taken my wolverine almost completely apart and don't think that I have ever seen a heat shield on my airbox except the heat shield on the exhaust pipe i dont think that is the one your talking about. I don't know if you just confused me or if you confused everyone and that is why no one has replied. So if you could tell me a little more I will do my best to help you.

There is a sticker type heat shield on the right side of the airbox. It is kind of hard to see but it is there or at least it is on mine. It is just an alluminum foil type sticker. It kind of looks like the heat shield tape that is on the front drive shaft cover. I hope this helps it is kind of hard to explain. Sorry for the confussion

yes there is a sticker type heat shield on mine too but its not peeling or anything,Id say get some 5mil aluminum at rivit into place...that would make a fine shield.

hey,was there a noticeable performance boost with your new pipe? Ive got a '00 and I dont have a lot of scratch to be tossing around looking for HP increases.

I doubt the problem is your diff fluid.... if you have enough diff fluid to travel all the way up that pipe, then you don't have enough left in your differential now. Besides that, the only way I know that fluid can climb that vent hose, is if the bike was upset for a long time and gravity did it. Other than that, there's no pressure to force the fluid up. I don't know why your sticker could be coming off, but I don't think I'd worry too much about it. Try going without anything there at all, and keep an eye on it.
As for your question, Metallikev, I have the same set up as jcsact on my '96 Wolv, and if you don't have much money, but want to boost HP, first I'd suggest a jet kit. They're cheap, and they work. Secondly, a high-flow air filter, like a K&N. Again, fairly cheap, and works. And if you do have the extra cash, the FMF Megamaxx II pipe works great. Between the 3 of these, you'll notice a definate increase in power.

I have to disagree with you Derek. I often have gear oil coming out of my vent lines, after which it drips onto the exhust pipe.
I'm not sure why it does that, though I'm sure it's not only after it's been rubber side up.
It seems to happen more often after doing alot of hill climbing (which makes sense because it's only the front diff that goes down) or after driving really hard.

Newfie,

That is when I notice it also. When I have been riding hard or have been riding trails with hills. I have never had my Wolv flip completely over (knock on wood):-) and I have only had it on its side twice but both where at a slow speed. I never noticed any extra leaking from the vent hose when I did this either. I think it is do to heat. The warm air in the differential is pushing the fluid out. But I never really noticed this until I changed the 2 bearings and seals on it. I think I might tear into it and replace the bearing inside the actual differential and change fluid again to see if I am getting the same thing. Has any one completely disassembled the rear differential before and is there anything I need to watch for, to make sure I get it back together properly? Thanks for all of the help guys.

I changed my bearing just a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty easy actually. Just take your time, don't rush it or anything.
The only trouble I had was that I put a very small burr on the spline which made it hard to get the hub back on, but I got it eventually.

Did you take the whole differential apart and replace the bearing in there also or just the 2 near the outside. One on right by the brake and one on the left on the outside of the diff. And what is the easiest way to get the one that is on the right side out. I think I remeber someone saying use a broom handle and hit it from the other side to tap it out
Thanks
