Default 1999-2002 Yamaha grizzly 600 4x4

Hey, I have a friend who has a Yamaha grizzly 600cc or 660cc I know it’s from the era of 1999-2002. It was flooded by going fully under( I believe) in a swamp a few years back and has not been repaired since. It needs at least a new carb, maybe a recoil, and probably other things like an air filter or things like that. He’s offered to sell it to me for around $500, and it has very low mileage. I don’t know how to tell if it would need a new piston and things like that because I’m not mechanically inclined. So, how do I tell if all it needs are little things that won’t cost more than a few hundred dollars? How do I tell if it can’t really be saved? All responses will be appreciated. Thanks

If you are not mechanically inclined, forget it. If the crankcase got water in it, which hasn't been removed and purged as soon as the bike came out of the water, the bearings and gears inside will all have gone rusty, and will need replacement. Also the breather tubes for front and rear axles may have let water into them, so you could be looking at new bearings for both diffs as well.

Okay, thank you very much for your reply. I agree I would not be able to fix anything mechanically besides replacing the carb and easy stuff like that. I was wondering if there are any good $800 atv’s around? I’m mainly interested in Yamaha’s, and I’ve seen some warriors that need a few things like tires but are like 8-900$. I know that has nothing to do with a grizzly but that’s the only other atv I’d probably consider. Thanks for any replies.
