warrior starter trouble?
#1
hey guys having a little trouble with my warrior bear with me please just bought it got about 5 hours on it everything seemed fine other then a clunk sound when I turned the engine off somtime starter clutch? anyways started having trouble turning over about 4 hours in didnt think much sounded like dyeing battery but it kept happening if i tapped selionde it would almost work that stoped then if i tapped starter it would almost work battery's fully charged on smart charger and putting out 12.57v unloaded and apparently only a month old I tryed direct connecting both to battery while started still on bike nothing new happened just solenoid click . So then I pulled the starter and the gears all look good and its spins well by hand and battery power but when i took it apart its full of gunk and oil and smells burnt gonna try cleaning it up and putting back together to see if that changes anything but Im really not sure weather its solenoid, starter clutch or starter any of you fine folks have any useful info for me?

Well don't "tap" starters, you can make the magnets drop off. Once all the gunge is cleaned off, check the com for burnt segments, if that is OK it should work fine, as long as the brushes are not worn down. If they are, fit a new set, much cheaper than a new starter and the original is always better quality than the Chinese knock offs sold by Arrowhead etc.

okay thanks for reply I jus tapped really light to see if I could diagnose the problem but yeah I pulled the starter apart and it was full of oil and gunk smelled burnt magnet has groove worn into it so I made the call to just get a cheap for now only 50 bucks on amazon aslong as it starts the engine right? if thats the issue I really dont know much about this stuff but I realized I can only push the atv forward or backward in N or with clutch pulled in thats not normal is it? also the gear inside the case that links to the starter gear has slight amount of play in it but spins well not if sure that means anything

Don't know the Warrior model but yes, either in neutral or clutch pulled to disconnect the drive. The starter gear in the case should spin free in one direction and lock solid if you try to spin it in the other.

okay thanks for the follow up merryman thats good to know the starter gear turns to the right easily but if I put decent amount of force it will move slighty to the left as well so thats not normal>?

When I wrote, "lock solid" I didn't mean it that literally, what it does is turn the crankshaft round in one direction and freewheel in the other. As it takes quite a bit of force to turn the crank by that gear, it usually feels to be locked.
