Default 1999 Bear Tracker 250 float level?

The fuel level is approx 4mm above the float bowl seam.

It starts and runs fine but fuel is slowly seeping from carb.

I am guessing the fuel level should be within 1.5mm above or below the seam. Anyone know the spec on this?

Second question - could the fuel leak be caused from the fuel level being 3mm to high?

Possibly a leaking float needle? How does the needle and the seat look?

Carb rebuild kit comes with a new needle.

If the level rises too high in the bowl, there is an overflow built in that will allow the access fuel to escape out of the bottom of the carb float bowl instead of running into the intake and filling up the engine. If the float needle IS the culprit, it'll leak out weather the bike is running or not, if the fuel selector valve on the tank is left open.

Not sure..
Did seem to slow down the leak when I snugged up the float bowl screws.

I Replaced a float valve about 8 years ago but dont recall if it was this one or the one on the kaw 175. The cycle shop is closed today and they might be able to tell me which machine the valve I installed back then was for.

Whichever one it was, I do recall lifting up the float and the valve was so fouled with old fuel that it wouldnt budge and I probably messed up the float height in the process.

Either way, for either machine, back then the goal was to get them running and then I stabilized the fuel, ran them, and drained the tanks and carbs. I had also added a touch of 2 cycle oil to the fuel to provide extra assurance that a thin film of protection remained for any fuel which remained in the system.

Ok, I pulled the carb. I now see that the fuel was most likely going into the overflow tube which is in the bowl. The valve seat was clean and the valve tip good, as well as the small plunger on top of the valve.

I lowered the fuel level to just below the bowl seam and fuel no longer seeps out.

now I am concerned I may have gone too low and need to shoot for a level even with the bowl seam (based upon my Kaw 400 prairie specs which say .5mm above the seam, +- 1mm). So in effect, my Kaw is saying .5mm below up to 1.5mm above.

I have not installed the carb yet, so hoping someone will have the spec.

Anyone?

Without a Bear Tracker workshop manual I don't know what is correct, but Japanese motorcycle carbs all seem to have a fuel level height of roughly the seam on the bowl. I would set it the same as the Kawasaki and see how you get on. It can't be that critical, uphill, downhill, rounding corners, are all going to alter level at the jet considerably, as you ride along.

Thank you. I will do the final check/adjustment and install.

Update - I set the fuel level real close to the bowl seam and installed the carb. It seems to run fine and doesn’t leak fuel. I will take it out for a test ride some other day because I ran out of daylight plus I want to take it to the farm where I can give it a good run.
