Default Yamaha timberwolf 250 won't electric start in neutral

My timberwolf 250 won't electric start in neutral. I have to slowly pull the shift lever up until the light goes off then it will start. I have a new battery and all the connections are good. I'm not sure where to go from there.

Yamahas have the most ridiculously over complex "lock out" system to stop you starting the bike in gear of any Quad. You will need the workshop manual and someone who is an expert in motorcycle electrics to sort it out. They do have an extra relay, and it is connected to the brakes as well as the neutral light sender, it also goes through the CDI on most Yams.

did you ever solve this? i have the exact same problem about needing to lift the gear shifter high enough so the green neutral light goes out to start.
