Lately I bought a used 2000 Kodiak. I've been through it doing the basic maintenance and it seems to be in pretty good condition. This is the first ATV I've owned and currently it sits in my garage. I've barely run it and there are no leaks I can see. But yet, the smell of gas in the garage is very strong.

Can you give me some things to look for that might be causing this or is this just normal for an ATV?

I don't think it is normal as I keep mine in my celler and it doesn't smell that bad. As for what to look for I am not to sure.

When riding, you are probably getting a tad of fuel onto the atv from the carb overflow. Stop periodically and check below the carbs for wet spots (or wherever the overflow tubes route to). If that's the problem, have someone fix it (probably the float too high).

Well first of all i would make shure you are turning the fuel flow off when you are not riding it. If it is off then pull off the plastic side pannels the carb is easily viewable from the left side. Spray the area with somthing like 409 and hose it out to get it all nice and clean. Let it sit for a week and look for the oily wet residue from a fuel leak. There is only 2 fuel lines, a on of switch and the carb so there is not really much to cause a leak in there. When my wife rolled hers her knee smacked the fuel switch and turned it past where it should have been. So when it was in the off posistion it was really in reserve.

I've noticed if my building gets hot through the day with the doors closed, it will make a 4-wheeler push gas through an overflow tube.

Just make sure you turn the gas off. They have gravity fed carbs, which will keep putting gas to the carb even while the machine is off. You are probably getting some overflow because of this.

It could just be that your fuel shutoff is no working. It could be the carb. but most of my atv's had a bad shutoff valve when they smelled of gas. But I have had to buy a new one every time it happened.
