YZ 400 Quad--Would you buy it?
#1
When Honda came out with the 400EX, it got all the world's attention. It was the first new racer in a long time. Every race had them, every after market company was making new stuff for it right away. There is no question that is was a success. My thinking is that if Yamaha came out with this quad and it is all it is cracked up to be would you sell your existing quad and buy one? I think it is going to be my next sport quad. I am not trying to start a fight with all the Honda guy's, but this engine is said to have 43+ horses. Thats a few more than the 400EX. Is everyone going to race to get this quad like people going after pokemon (sp)? I don't hink Yamaha will have any over stock with this quad. Heck people are all ready building there own YZ400's, by putting the engine in Banshee, Warrior, Lager 250R frames. This thing could be huge!

I think it would be awesome if Yamaha put a YZ426 engine in a GOOD chassis. The YZ426 can beat any 250 MXer and it can hold its own with the open class 2-strokes: Honda CR500, Kawasaki KX500 and KTM 380SX. In a drag race, it could hang with a Banshee, if not beat it. As like everyone knows, the drag strip isn't everything. Throw in a motocross track and some trails, and I think the 4-stroke engine would be better than a 2-stroke. Four-strokes hook up and are less tiring to ride. It has tractable power, like any 4-stroke. But like a 2-stroke, it would still be exhilarating because it revs to 11,500 rpm!
If Yamaha put this quad in a new chassis, I'd consider selling my 400EX. Or, maybe I'd keep my 400EX, buy the YZ426 dirt bike and school any quad.
I hope I didn't cut my own throat by saying typing that last sentence! That issue will be saved for another time . . .

If they put it in a decent frame?
H*!l, Yes!
The YZ400F motor(don't know about the 426 yet) can hold it's own against the CR500 and
the KX500, even though it has only a 43.5
Rear wheel peak, as compaired to the 56H.P.
peak of the CR and the 55H.P. peak of the KX,
due to the broad range of power it produces.
The KX makes 40(and +) H.P. from 5000 to 8000
R.P.M. for a 3000 R.P.M. range same for the CR
the YZ400F makes the same from 6750-11000 R.P.M. for a 4350 R.P.M. range.
in the 30(+) H.P. bracket the CR runs from
4250 to 8500 R.P.M, the KX from 3750 to
8500 R.P.M.
The YZ from 5500 to 11500 R.P.M.(thats when
the factory Rev-limiter kicks in) and is still making approx 36 H.P. at that point.
that is why the YZ400F would make a great
Quad engine no matter what format,
Sport-ute(wolverine)Sport 4X4(scramblers)
Utility(Kodiak, Grizzly or Sportsman type)
or Hi-Po (400EX, Banshee, or Sport/Scrambler
400 2X4)
Will Yamaha wake up and realize what this
could do for them? I hope so
Great Day

"You better believe it!" This quad is for real and is in final development stages. It will be releases as a 2001 or early 2002 model. I am not sure if it will be the 400 or the 426 though. I will keep you posted on what I hear and I don't want to hear any crap from all of you non-believers either! You will see, all in good time.

BansheeBen2,
Believe me I'm drueling at the idea too. But to me that's all it is, an idea. Every claim I hear about this quad actually being made goes something like this. My brother in laws sisters cousin who works down at a local bike shop heard from a coworker who overheard a conversation with a sales rep that Yamaha is going to be making some super quad for 2001.
Like I said, no real conclusions can be made from anything I have heard up until now. Until I hear it from the big blue man himself
I have to wait and wonder.

Would I buy one? YES!!!! I have a '90 Warrior and after riding my buddy's 400ex it feels like I'm dragging an anchor. Yamaha should consider this: Free advertisement! Look at all the ads in ATV magazines. Practically every advertisement showing aftermarket parts is attached to a 400ex. I can't imagine that the atermarket wouldn't do the same if Yamaha would finally put together a modern quad. If they do wake up and smell the roost lets pray they don't use the same STUPID air filter box they are presently using.
