99 Wolverine problems, help anyone??

Dam, it all seemed to happen at once. I first started hearing a weird noise in my front end, mostly when I would let go of the throttle it would make a squeaking noise but I thought it might have been the brakes since it only started after I went mudding with it. I ignored it for a while but then my dam starter acted up. Found out that some teeth in the starter broke and one of the gears teeth in the fly wheel broke. I was messing around with the starter and had the wolv. off the ground to get a closer look at what the squeaking was and it looks like the noise is coming from the front universal joint. It has a lot of play and little metal shavings are coming off of it.. I'm scared to even find out how much all this is going to cost me... Anyone ever run into this problem?? Ball park figures on pieces like starter gear for fly wheel and universal joint?? I'm dealing in Canada here so its probably 10 times more than the states.. Sounds like you ran the **** out of that wolverine. My diognostic is with the 25inchers and super trap, you really rode your quad hard, through mud, water, snow, and started juimping and racing it. Our 95, well ridden but not abused has never had a problem. I am guessing about 100bux here, 150 there.

Sorry 'bout your troubles. It sounds like it will likely be expensive. Check out this link... it's for online pricing of parts. I use it for a rough idea of what parts are gonna cost me. Just ad a few bucks for shipping and a whole lot more for the exchange rate, and you'll get a ball park figure. It's pretty easy to use... it's in an exploded micro-fiche type view, just like the dealers use. Just match the number on the part in the view, and look down to match it up to a description and a price. Good luck.ATV Parts Online

bsr that was a helpful response for a fellow rider. Does it really matter what the hell he rides, NOT!!! No wonder people get pissed on these boards. He just asked a simple question. Hell I know of plenty of Honda's that breakdown but that is not the point.
I would think you are looking at around 150 of so. Not to sure about Canada though. Big tires will accelerate the wear and tear on any type of machine as it stresses the parts more. Hope it is not too expensive for you. The Wolverine overall is a great machine and over all the years it has been out it is still a favorite machine of many and is really pretty bullet proof with a little maint.

Hi there Slywolf, it's been a while.
Did you crack off a tooth on the flywheel itself, or on the idler gear? the same thing happened to me earlier this summer. I know that to replace the starter is roughly $500 from Yamaha, and the idler gear is $135.
As for the U-joints, Goattrotter is wrong. I replace my u-joints with after market ones that have more play end to end, and which are greasable. As with any car or truck the u-joints will eventually have to be replaced.
As for the stuff about the 25" tires, ask these guys to explain to you how tires have anything to do with the starter which is your only real problem. The u-joints are cheap (about $20)and relatively easy to change.
Do keep an eye on your bearing. After 2 very full years of serious use, I've changed my front bearings twice, and my rear once. Not too bad considering the running I've done with it, and the amount of time it spends in mud and water. I also never get the chance to wash it during the summer.
Finally, check your cam chain. I was suprised to find mine worn out after about 18 months. I thought that was a bit much.
As for the very stupid comment about getting a Honda instead. The company I work for ran 8-10 quads this spring, and except for mine, they were all either Honda 350's or the older 300's. One crew, which was running 3 quads at one point had none that were working. Another crew in Sioux Lookout had to go and rent a Polaris and another week a Kodiak because their Rancher was out with transmission troubles. Most of these Hondas were new rentals that would have seen about a month of use when they had problems.
They all break down, they all wear out, they all have their good points and their bad. If you don't believe that, try working your quad for a season in Northern Ontario. Your eyes will soon be opened.
