Ok I have a 2001 Raptor which I love . Just wondering I switched to a 12T front sprocket which made it an awesome woods machine, but I have heard people say you shouldn't switch to the 12T because of chain wear and the extra heat it generates. I was wondering if anybody on here has had problems with running the 12T front . I have been running mine for about 2 months now with no problems at all , should I be concerned about it or not? It's really not that much smaller than the 13T as far as being hard on the chain. The way I look at it I may have lost a little H.P. by changing but I sure am saving on the clutch which doesn't get feathered near as much anymore. Also how much top end did I lose (MPH)? I was guessing my top speed is around 68-70mph is that a good guess?

Thanks Guys
The reason I didn't change the rear sprocket was because of the loss in ground clearance.

You probably lost around 4-5 mph. As far as increased wear, i doubt it.

well, I switched to a 11tooth, no problems at all, just adjusted the chain to fit it better.

Leaving out all the engineering jargon, yes chain wear is increased, no you do not need to be concerned about it. I believe it was around 6.6%. This was from an engineering "white paper" I came across while researching motorcycle/ATV oil filter build specs.

FYI - I made the change to a 12 tooth a year ago, and have had no wear issues with the chain. I've querried several people on the net and searched a few times for chain wear issues. Some people claim a significant decrease in horsepower, excessive chain wear, extra gear wear, etc. When it comes to changing a tooth or two, almost every claim has appears to be bunk as far as I can tell. Many people swear by their claims, but every reference on websites I've found (& a few magazine articles) could not prove any of them and also dismissed them. Maybe slightly more wear on a smaller gear since it turns more often, changing gear ratios can effect torque and horsepower calculations, and perhaps there is little more wear if you cruise at 55MPH on the highway with smaller gears.

If anyone out there disputes this, please point me to a magazine story, website, or some other reputable source and I'll eat crow.

Thanks guys. Skramblr that's kinda what I thought for me the 12T is great I love it I did notice a little more chain noise but I don't think it's a big deal . What's your top speed with a 12T? Will I still smoke my buddie on his 400ex? My B&W is stock except for the 12T

well i had the 12 tooth on when my raptor was stock, and it was the ticket
but i noticed when i added a little more HP that the 12 tooth is too low
i was on a back road running pretty fast and the engine was screaming!!!
now i have the 13 back on.
open your air box up and you will not need the 12 tooth

Ditto on the ground clearance, we are going to put 22" rear tires on our raptor and flip the shock linkage. This is going to raise the gearing, which is fine as far as my son is concerned, but with the new HMF slip-on and maybe some air filter/airbox work this thing is really going to leave me in the dust. I have 22"XCT's on my DS and that extra inch of ground clearance helps a lot. But I went down two teeth on my countershaft sprocket (I really wish both these quads had 6-speed gearboxes with a low first gear) and though it does help me get through the rough stuff, it hurts top end and performance. I may have to compromise and go back up one tooth to keep up with the raptor.

I have been running a 12T countershaft for a year now with no problems, I do notice the loss at the high end but for the technical riding I do its not a problem. I did just rebuild my motor (cam, valves springs, 102mm high comp piston, polish and port) and with the extra low end I will be going back to a 13T

vraptor, i am very interested in what u did to your raptor. How much more power? How hard was it to put together? How much was it total? Do you have to run race gas or just premium? Any info is appreciated because i am wanting to do this, thanks, sean
