I finally got my '02 Raptor in on Wednesday. I have a few questions about breaking it in. How long should I break it in? Any special instructions? I've read to not keep it at the same RPMs for a long period of time and to let it cool off about every hour or so. My local shop told me to put two tanks of gas through it and then I can do whatever I want. I have about 2 hours on it so far.

When I got my raptor they told me the same thing,
Stay below 1/2 throttle, With short blurps up to 3/4 or so.
Never holding a rpm for extended periods of time for the first tank full.
Letting it cool for 1/2hr or so every 45 minutes of riding.
They told me this is to be sure the seals set properly.

Not sure if the above post is true, but, Is what I did.

The 2nd tank Pretty much do what ya like still trying not to hold rpm's for long periods of time.

I highly recomend changing the fluids after your 2nd tank full.

I purchased my raptor a year ago and this is how I broke the motor in. I rode it for ten to fifteen minutes then I headed over to a 600 ft. sandhill. Rode right up the hill two or three times in third gear tapped. Then I proceeded to ride the crap out of it the rest of the day. I changed my oil on a regular basis along with cleaning the filter as well. I sold my raptor and bought an '88 250r with a CT 350 powervalve motor. Anyway, it probably wasn't the best break in procedure, but I never had any kind of mechanical failure ever, and I rode it extremely hard for a year. The raptor motors seem quite durable in my opinion.

Hey, Did you read the manual about the break -in? Try that. They wouldn't be lying to you.

take the time and break it in right.....if you dont and something goes wrong you will always wonder if it was because of the break in..for the first tank of gas id set the throttle stop to avoid full throttle.its located on the throttle assembly. its tempting to open it up just once,,,avoid the urge and take it slow..if you plan on selling it in a year it wont make that much diffrence.the long run is where you will save money.

I have about 1 tank of gas through it. About 55 miles or so. I am so ready to get on it though! When should I change the oil?

I bought my Raptor, rode for 15 minutes, headed up Sand Mtn at LS Utah three times tapped in third. Have had it for a year now and ridden the crap out of it. Sound familiar. Buddah is my brother and we bought them the same day and went out together. Guess what, same results. Not a mechanical problem AT ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! I still have mine and even race it at the tracks.
