Older Banshee jeting question

My son just brought home a good and used older banshee (maybe late 80s). It has been modified and have seen it run at one time and it was a screamer. It has not been taken care of at all. It runs but not well. It has good compression. My question is about jetting. What is the stock jets both main and pilot on a stock Banshee. We pulled the carbs and the mains are 155 and the left one has a 40 pilot and the right has a 55. Are these anywhere close ? Just not sure where to begin. We feel sure it has been bored but not how much or how many times. It has FMF pipes. Any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like they may have taken the carbs that were on the machine off before they sold it. That or they are not the stock size carbs because the jetting is nowhere near close. The stock main's are 180's (at 5000+ alt) and depending on your altitude, you should probably be running in the heighborhood of 310's-320 main jets. I believe stock pilot jets are 25's, but I may be wrong. (try a search of other posts that may give you this answer) Does it have upper "a-arms"(91-2001) or upper "j-arms"(87-90)? This will give you an indication of what year it is. Other than small changes, there is no real difference between the differnt year motor wise. Have fun, hope I was some help..

Roostking is right you most probably have some aftermarket carbs on there,i am guessing some Keihin 34 PJ carbs but you will have to check and make sure what they are exactly before we can help you.

It does have the j arms and the carbs are the Keihin 28s. Have adfusted the floats and have it running at the moment but not good. It does not want to rev up. Am trying to locate another 40 and 55 pilot to match the ones in it and see if it helps to have both 40s or both 55s. At least they would match.

Are you still running the 155? main jet, if so, be careful, thats way too lean...

The guy he got if from is a friend of his and he knows absolutely nothing about an engine. (Has a hard time changing plugs) He has had this bike for about 3 years and it used to really fly. The carbs have not been messed with by him since he bought it according to him. So if that is true, he has been running the 155s for some time now. I agree that it sounds awful lean from what you guys are saying. Another friend with a 2000 says he runs 310s. His has a lot of things done to it. Do you know if one side runs a different size pilot like we found and if so, which side runs the biggest? Thanks again.

They should be the same left/right. I am running FMF fatties and some other stuff, but no internal engine work and I run 310's.

Actually 155 mains in 28mm Keihin carbs should be pretty close to what you need to run you have to remember that the stock Banshee carbs are Mikunis so therefore the main jet size do not apply here.As for the pilots you should go for the 40 on both sides.Now if you can describe to us exactly how your quad runs i can help ,you know how it runs 0-1/4,1/4-3/4,3/4-wot.

I will have to get back with you on how it runs. Just got it started this morning. Can't get it to idle yet. Do not have place to ride it close to home. Will load it up Wed. and take it out to see what happens. In the garage, it falls on its face about mid range and up. Just doesn't sound like it wants to rev up. More later, Thanks again.
