Raptor690, I see you update your tranny of 02 for half price. Which is good, but for my tranny I setting up use it for desert racing, There are time you really use lot of torque to get out of trouble spot and also use on dune too.

Well the '02 tranny is much better then the '01 and should pose no problems...But I don't ride mine in the sand at all ..and where and when I ride is like racing in the desert everyday only worse..atleast in the desert you kinda know what to expect ..not like around here when you have to dodge deer, birds, rabbits, raccoons, sticks, trees, mud, rocks ,logs, people and things like that..I know desert racing is fast and wideopen , But that is how I ride around here everyday I spend atleast ten minutes after each ride picking out sticks and rocks from the frame. most of my riding time is spent in 4th and 5th gear with it pinned. so we will see how it goes as far as if it will stand up to the test of time and me. Don't get me wrong here I'm not looking to fight about who rides faster or anything like that ..I just didn't want you to think I baby mine or live somewhere that I ride in daisy's all day

Hey Raptor, not a problem what you mention, everbody have different taste of riding and so on.
Not much of trail riding for the raptor in Wa. due to my wide a-arm. I just set mine up for dune and desert racing condition.
Also what pipe are you running on?

I wish you could just replace the 2nd and 3rd gears but you can't because of the cogs being 4 instead of 3 (from Yamaha) unless you go to Sam Cole and get his update kit which is just 2nd and 3rd gear ...I updated because I wanted the different gear ratio that the 2002 has ..not a big deal ..but I spend alot of time riding in the woods and being able to pick your gear more precisly is what I wanted (try backing out of a tight spot with a 2001 once)...And also I ice race my raptor and need the in between gear that the 2002 offers so it makes sprocket changes easier with less guessing..Now I can leave the corners in 3rd versus 2nd and having to shift twice down the straight ...Other then that you DO NOT NEED to upgrade to a 2002 tranny unless you want a closer gear ratio and a lower reverse ..
I will post what you need to order from your Yamaha dealer for a 2002 update
I priced it out at 2 dealers and they both gave me the same price of around $480.00

Thanks Raptor690. Didn't know if I had all the parts, I see I was missing a couple. Now I'm set for the day that I hope never comes.

I have 3 01 Raptors. The oldest Raptor ser # is 0777 and the other ser # is 06163. The 3rd ser# is 12141 and it gets used very little. It still looks unused at this time. I will be doing the work myself if and when needed. There are alot of people that spend a lot of money in this sport and the tranny repairs are cheap when compared wth the total dollars involved. The money is not the big factor here, SAFETY is the issue. Yamaha knows about the problem but is willing to play the numbers game and take the risk that it is cheaper to ignore the issue. Shame on Yamaha!
