I know how you feel of the tranny lock up. I had my tranny start to go after I put on LRD pipe and rode for aweek and then 2nd gear start to slip. Luckly for me my still under warranty. What I am doing is putting Fortin gears that will cover 2nd and 3rd. It come the complete kit for those two gear. That where the 01 tranny weak leak is. it only happen when you are in extreme load of torque.
The number to call for Fortin gear is Sam Coe Performance #619-448-7498
The gear set price is NOT cheap. It will cost you around $900 or so. They will help you and they are about two week out to get it. So give them a call and they will help you.

Good luck

The gears are forged and have 3 shift dogs (01) in 02 they changed them they now have 4. Yamaha knows there is a problem with these first trans but won't do anything if your off warranty. I say if you know it's a problem have some b@lls and admit to your mistakes and do a recall. Fat chance that will happen You can replace the broken parts and risk them crapping out again or you can upgrade to the 02 gears. There are aftermarket gear sets out as well and I don't think that they are forged. If you check other posts I have listed the parts needed to do the upgrage for the 02 trans. Someone on here is selling a new set of gears for the 02, don't remember who. Good luck.

Call Yamaha/Usa in California. Be NICE and POLITE and state your case. Mention you're concerned, but never ever admit abuse or guilt. You just do casual riding. Be nice and you will get taken care of. Don't yell or bad mouth. Be a jerk on the phone and you're SOL!! He will tell you to take it to a dealer. Pull the motor out only. Don't tear anything off!!!!
The dealer book for complete tear down and reassemble is 3.5 hours. Don't beleive me call Plaza Cycle in West Valley Utah at 801-972-8725...
1-800-962-7926 is Yamaha/USA phone number.
They are well aware of the problem, but won't tell you that.
They will do it under "The Goodwill program" Every car, boat, piano, ect does this to ensure future business......You will have to pay for labor only if you do what I say!!!!!!!!!

It's not very easy to be nice on the phone with Yamaha while they're coming up with every excuse they can think of why it's your fault and refusing to even acknowledge that they've even heard of another case of your problem ever happening anywhere. Axle, tranny, carb boot - you name it, they've never heard of any problems like that at all. Just try to talk to them and you'll see. Your blood will be boiling in two minutes. The wonderful woman I got to talk to was Lisa. A real gem - ask for her by name. Then I talked to her supervisor. He defended every snide remark she made and expressed no concern whatsoever about my dissatisfaction with their product and their support. This was a year ago this month. Maybe things have changed since then, but I seriously doubt it.

I talked to Jim Moore. I also stated how I drag raced many big bore superbikes and I didn't even have a clutch go out. I also said the way this is handled will determine if I will ever consider another Yamaha product again. I also stated my age and currently own a Vstar and have owned many Yamaha's. I also mentioned this forum and b l u e t r a x x. Knowledge is power! You must come ready or go home a loser!! Never admit abuse of the machine.....
