I got my motor parts back from TRINITY (trick work!) and I had no problems installing everything. It was a 2 person job to slide the cylinder over the piston (used a hose clamp for the rings and 2 pieces of wood under the piston to keep it from going down into the case) The cam gear took a helping hand as well. After a few hours of work the 686 started on the first shot with 180/185 mains with needle in 4th slot. I did the cam break-in and will do the rest of the break-in this weekend! Thanks Harry, Raptor720, and the other atvconnection members here who helped me with my 686 questions. It is going to be torture putting around during break-in!!! I will let you all know my final setup and results.

Later.

Blue leader.

I have a lot of experience tearing down 2 stroke engines heads and cylinders and putting them back together. My question is. How much harder is it to do a 4 stroke? Can a halfway knowledgeable backyard mechanic, with the help of the Yamaha service manual, tear down and reinstall the Raptor as you did for this kit? TIA

The difference between 2 stroke and 4 as far as rebuilds is the head and setting the cam timing. Everything else is the same. I have rebuilt sleds and a 16-valve 4-cylinder bike engine. I didn't really find it that much harder. If you follow the shop manual and take your time, it should be no big deal. So go for it

Good advise airraptor. My brother has had his DS head off and cams. If he can do it I should be able to as well. I can read and follow instructions. Thanks for the tips.

Congrats blueleader! You should be happy. If not you are hard to please.Double check the torque on the head gasket. The local shop muffed the first one. I have seen one or two post on others saying the same thing.

I know the cam sprocket was the toughest part for me, I didnt have a second pair of hands available. trinity does a good job.
wshrdskin: its not that difficult, just takes a bit of time, service manual, and if you have someone to help it goes a lot quicker

TRINITY had my parts for 3-4 weeks.
My quality Armstrong torque wrenches where helpful.
2 sets of hands for the cam sprocket makes things easy.

King, I won't be the fastest in the group for too long. People are pissed (jealous) and are setting aside the time to tear-down, mail to Harry, and install 686's on their Raptors!!!!!!

Now I get to fumble with jetting all over again
