When adjusting the valves, should I shoot for the middle of the range, or to one end or the other of the range?

Intake: .10 - .15 mm
Exhaust: .15 - .20 mm

For example: should I shoot for .12 -.13 (the middle of the range) for the intake or take them to .15 mm?

Thanks....

Go for the low side: .11 intake, .16 exhaust. Less wear and noise. And don't be suprised if you never have to adjust the exhaust side again.

And buy the yamaha oem tool to adjust the tappets (shown in the shop manual). It takes 3 months to get, but will make your next adjustment a breeze.

Of course, anywhere between 10-15mm is in spec for the intake and and anywhere between 15-20mm is good for the exhaust.
I like too set mine on the tight side of the recommended specs. Why? Because on the "loose" side of recommended specs, you loose a tad of the cam.....maybe unnoticable for the rider....but there is a difference. Same thing as a solid lift set-up in an automobile. What are the drawbacks? More frequent valve adjustment.....I check mine after about every 10-15 hours of operation religiously.
I would advise too be a tad more conservative and shoot for the middle of the recommended clearances. Take your time and get the adjustment PERFECT.
Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question.....hopefully I can help. Later.

I presonally go to the looser side of the specs on the intakes just because they are generally on the tight side when I adjust them. I figure if I put the intakes at .15 they will stay in spec longer.

I agree with the Exhausts .15~.16 because they never have been out of spec in the 3 times I've adlusted mine so far.

Thank you everyone for your replies! It is a done deal. All went well for my first time doing valves. I love when people can help each other out more... maybe I can return the favor one day?!

I actually went slightly to the loose side on the intakes (mainly because I will be the first one to let it slide past the 20 hrs). The exhaust was still within spec since the yamie stealership did it.

Also installed the stage 2 DynoJet kit today as well. I had several people say that it wasn't worth my time or money. "Use bigger jets with the stock needles", they said! (besides, that was where I already was) So people started making me nervous about the whole deal... well let me tell ya that the new jet kit with the new W.B. stainless header really made my Raptoid peppier! Lot better throttle response ~ just plain snappier! Haven't got to open it up yet... all that will come Sat. at The Badlands.
P.S. Gary, I like your question and answer format! You were right on.
Thanks again y'all!!

Hey raptoid how is the badlands? I was thinking on taking a trip there. What can I expect there? Dragging, hillclimbing, jumps, mud, dirt, gravel?????

Alljuice - the Badlands is pretty decent. It does not have a drag strip but has a good hardpack spot where you can get in a full 300ft. drag, 2 - 3 quads wide.

There are a few little jumps here and there, but nothing big. There is no track with jumps or anything. We still manage to get some decent air.

They have some pretty serious hardpack hill climbs, they have quite a bit of sand (it's not "dunelike" sand), gravel, mud pits and good woods trails, and some nasty creek trails (skull and crossbone trails) for the 4X4 quads and jeeps. They have all kinds of terrain.

Can you possibly make it this Saturday with us? there is a post about it on here. With all my buddies and other people coming from another forum, we may have about 12 folks hooking up together. Let us know...

Which valves are which? Are the two valves on the same rocker the intake or exhaust?

The cap on top of the head will expose the three intake valves, and the cap on the front side of the head (by the headers) will expose the two exhaust valves!
