This board gets alot of travel, so here goes--

I was told to try resetting my valve clerance to improve a cold starting problem.

This is on a 160cc engine- not OHC, 2 valve..

Would having the valve clerance set too tight affect starting? I am curious!!

Yes. Setting the valves too tight will cause it hard to start....or not even start at all.

Why though?? Is it because it might be tight enough to not close the valve all the way?? I cannot think of any other reason?? HELP!

If the valves are to tight they will stay open and all the compresion will get by the open valves.

Well, okay.

I found out it needed a valve job by noticing that it wasn't sucking air though the carb, I put my hand over the carb and air was actually pushing out, so that told me the vavles weren't closing right..

Its got a good "suction" thru the carb, maybe just not quite enough or long enough to allow easy starting.. Okay- makes sense now. Hope thats what my problem is!

Thanks guys!

Well- I checked my valves- and the intake did seem a little tight. So I loosened it up some, but it still won't start- I'm getting spark and even with spraying carb cleaner up in it- no go... I'm beggining to think I've had the timing slightly off this whole time- I need to go find out.

Could this be syptoms of bad timing?? Once started- it seemed to run well- Can Anybody help me out?

I just HAFTA get this thing going again, I wanna take it along on our next ride- that way if any Raptors or Banshees beat my Suzuki, They'll have to answer to the big bad 160!! lol

Well, I checked the valves, and they seemed okay. The intake was a little tight, so I backed it off alittle.. I checked my timing again too, and it was "good". Still, I pulled till I was blue in the face with no results--- And then today I pulled it with my quad, and bam!- fired right up and actually ran good!

After I shut it off- it would fire right back up on the first pull!

After it cooled down though, same story- I was pulling and pulling with NO result..

Can anybody give me an Idea of what to try next??

Could be a bad sparkplug wire- It was shocking me- I have heard they aren't supposed to if they are good.(I also did a continuity check, and it did show bad, But I put a new wire on, and it still didn't start pulling the rope...)

Sounds like low compression or weak ignition...

Cool, I'm gonna go thru the ignition and check it all out

I am using a 6 volt automotive(tractor, actually) coil, you know, the kind that look like a pop can- and am wondering if that might have something to do with my problems..

How can I get a hotter spark??

It sparks good while the plug is out, but I know that doesn't nessecarily mean its strong enough for proper starting- is there anything I can try? A different plug perhaps? a different coil?

Is there a good way to check a coil for power output?

Thanks guys, keep the help coming!!!

Since it started by towing it sounds like low compression.
