I have a 95 wolverine that came new with no fender flares. I am tired of getting more mud on myself than on the bike every time I ride it. It will throw mud off the front tires all over me and the back fenders, when I drive through the slightest sign of mud or even on a wet dirt road. It even throws mud in my face if I dont keep the shield down on my helmet. I dont mind getting dirty sometimes but this thing is kind of rediculous.
What I want to know is with the flares on the newer wolverines, do you guys get as dirty as I do? I can buy the kit through Yamaha and install them but are they really worth it? I know the bike looks much more aggressive without the flares but I'd prefer function before style.Let me know what you think.

Sparky
I seen the flares I believe you are talking about and I believe that it could tear up the plastic if you got the hung on a tree or something. I have had the same problem before and I thought about the flares I seen in the Dennis Kirk Magazine. I just don't want my plastic to rip so I didn't get them

Thanks Harold, The Yamaha flares are the ones I,m talking about. I didnt know you could buy aftermarket ones though. I think i'll order a set of them from Yamaha. They also come with all the mounting hardware. You're luckey you're not in Canada where I am cause they want $169 at my dealer for them but i think its money well spent. But what the heck eh? our gas is almost $4.00 a gallon now.

I agree with jcsact. I bought the yammy flares about a year ago, and was very disappointed when they arrived. They are made of very hard, thick plastic. There is no give to them at all. Also, the front flares hang way down below the skid plate; looking like they would tear off the front fenders the first time you jumped some train tracks or high-sided anything. They were like scoops to hold you back in the mud.I ended up installing the rears, but I used the fronts as a form to make my own out of black poly.Parts Unlimited has an aftermarket set,but it looks like they are just flat plastic. They bolt way inside the fender {looks like a lot of leverage when they get caked with mud}.

Just another input, I put the Yamaha Fender Flares on my 00 Wolv, and I think they came out looking fairly decent to me, they still look MUCH sportier than the Yamaha flares I put on my wifes Bear Tracker, the only draw back, is you just can't drop off of a sheer drop off, they will hang up that way. I have not had a problem with them, whenever I come up to something that looks like it could hit it, I just gas the throttle and make sure my flaps clear the drop off.

Sparkys,

I noticed the mud problem you're talking about too. Especially in the trails around here right now, and especially along the hydro-lines. I think my biggest problem is that the oversized tires I have on mine, stick out further than the fenders are designed to cover. It's worse when I make a turn. I noticed that you have bigger tires on your bike too. that's likely a big part of the problem. The question now is, is it a big enough problem to go back to smaller tires and lose all the advantages of the big ones? If you do decide to buy the flares, whatever you do, don't go to Maclean's. Their mark up will kill you. Check out the kimpex catalogue at Canadian Tire. you will probably find them in there, and CT's mark up is way less.
