Just thinking about the 01 Rap trans....is the failure a alignment problem + weak gear (1 less dog when compared too the 02)......we even see Fortins break.....alignment problem letting the dogs engage in the wrong position? Whats your opinions?

I just can't believe my Raptor is an accident waiting to happen.

Before each ride I talk to my Raptor and get down on my knees in front of it and beg it not to break.

If its breaks I might not never be heard of again and especially if my cell phone battery dies.

Gary, this is just my opinion, but there a few that feel the same way as I do.

I personally believe that the failures to the 01's are caused by the use of reverse. My thought is, you use reverse and get it back into gear, the gears tend to not line up and engage "perfectly", you go out and ride and they get damaged. After doing this a couple hundred times or so, they wear and eventually fail.

My 01 Rap is #2454 (one of the very early ones made)

Now, to back some of my belief up. When I had my 01 fail, my raptor was completely "stock" with no more then 250 hours. 2nd gear and the toothed spacer failed and took out most everything else. I used reverse as a luxury. If it made sense to use it, I did. I was always very careful to come to a complete stop and to make sure I got it back into first without grinding the gears.

I then had the entire 01 trans replaced with another 01, as the 02's were no where close to being available or developed (March 2001). While having the tranny istalled, I also went ahaed and had a Trinity 686 done too. This time, I never used reverse and haven't had any problems at all. I increased the power quite a bit, didn't use reverse (EVER) and had zero problems with the second 01 tranny.

So there's my story and I'm sticking to it. I really think that "most" of the failures are caused by the use of the reverse and if you don't use it, "most" won't have any problems. I will say that I did go with the 02 set for my recently built 727, just to be sure and to take a look at the 01 that was in it for the 686. I will say that I did not even hook the reverse cable up to my 727, I just disconnected the cable entirely so that nobody will try and use it either. The old 01 trans from my 686 looks very good, with literally zero wear. No rounded dogs or anything even remotely close that looks weak or bad.

Hope this helps, with another veiw point to consider.

Swy

Swy and team, i've always maintained that it was related somehow to reverse gear, your theory sounds good, this was the opinion from a Yamaha projects bike / tech manager here in NZ also when this problem very first came up................

THanks for the replies guys. Remember, the 01 tranny is straight from the overseas streetbike withe the addition of reverse.....this tranny was'nt originally designed with reverse.
