I was just wondering, for those of you who own a blaster, how long(hours, days, weeks, years?) you can ride in between top-end rebuilds? How hard do you ride?
thanks

We used to own a 93 Blaster, and put two hard seasons of duning on it without changing it out. I am quite sure it had a lot of time put on it before we even got ahold of it.

It all depends on how much of a gambler you are, how often you ride, and how hard you ride.

I would say 100 ride hours is a pretty good length of time to go on a piston and rings.

Over time the piston will begin to fatigue, and will eventually crack.
This will be VERY expensive for you if it goes that far.

Use a good synthetic oil, and make sure the jetting is correct.
Many many motors have a short life due to incorrect jetting.

The fuel is a major contributor to keeping the engine cool and lubricated. Go too lean and the motor will over heat damaging the piston, rings, and cylinder wall.

Hope this helps.

I ran mine hard and for some very very long trips and local sand dune riding almost every day for over 3 years all year long with no break downs. Over 30,000 km or 20,000 miles.
(And it was used and had 2 years running on it before I got it.)
a 3 day trip or 30 mile run at 45-50mph was nothing for it ,but I would never hold the throttle WOT for any amount of time.( no point as it would keep up to anything on the trails anyways)
My only mods were 240 main jet in the cooler months 230 in the summer, aftermarket silencer and Boyesen reeds.
I used 92-94 octane Sunoco or Petro-can fuels, Mobil 1 10-30 auto oil in the tranny and Amsoil in the injector. I also used to add a cap full of oil to a fresh tank of fuel.

I checked the compression every month and did a complete tear down and go over every 3 months to properly clean and lube every pivot point and bearing.

Peltrax, how do you like the toomey b-1 kit? How much more power and sound did you gain with it? thanks for replying to my original post.

It gave it a lot more power same bottom and about 4 more mid to high rpms....It makes it a lot quicker and revs a lot farther..i wood probably say 5 quad lengths quicker in a run through the gears....the sound is awesome not too loud sounds like a 250 mx bike....

Yes. that was a low balled number too. I would not be surprised if the number was closer to 30 +. I lived in nothern Muskoka ontario at the time in a town called bear lake. At the time I was trapping and selling live bait and my rout was over 30 miles per day some time twice a day in the spring and summer as well as driving to work. I rode the Blaster for over 3 years, on twice as many trips, farther and longer than both my bikes I had at the time . Plus I rode the blaster all year long .Between both my bikes in the 4 years I had them I put on 20,000 miles (both had speedos).
I made the trip from Hwy11 over to Parry sound along the seguin trail every few weeks ,and a few times we rode from Parry Sound to Ottawa (3 day trip).
In the winter the trails were unlimited as to how far you wanted to go. Weeknights I would ride into town to play hockey (15 miles each way) and on weekends we would plan 2 to 4 day trips and average 15 hours of riding each day. Since I lived on a major snowmobile trail (our drive way was Sno#7 ) I had over 500 miles of just snowmobile trails I could ride anytime.

BTW My Artic cat I got the winter after I logged 5000 miles on it and I hardly ever used it compared to my balster

The only thing I changed was a lot of tires (3-4 sets a year) and chains and sprockets, light bulbs. It ran flawless...
Even when I did end up rebuilding it... the piston and cylinder clearance was still with in specs, the rings were just worn out and started catching on the ports. I bored it and threw in a new piston and rode it for 2 years then sold it .

Hey hardlydangerous, you old dog!!
What he heck are you doing over here?

20,000 miles??!!

Wow! You are WAY more of a gambler than I!!

If you say its true, I believe you though!

I ride only in the sand, so I know the hours I put on an engine are a lot harder, but still......

I think I would be worrying about a ring or piston breaking!

SHhhhhhhh
Im not here !
you thinkin' of the OTHER hardlydangerous !lol

yeah like I said I kept a close eye on the compression. When it finally did quit some one else had taken it for a ride with out me knowing and with out my permission and it only took one ride and it broke,(likely did not let it warm up properly) The next time I got on it it lacked a lot of power and smoked pretty bad.
compression was 80 PSI. so i tore it down and rebuilt the top end with a fresh bore and mild porting etc.

Even our sand dunes were never very soft like what you ride on so it is not near as hard on it either. the only time my quad worked really hard was with the paddles in the deep snow ( 1' or more) .
other than that i kept the tire fairly hard ,suspension soft and throttle off the pin.

I give all the credit to my maintenance overkill and synthetic oils. The blaster oil injection is supposed to be about 20 :1 but after doing the math it is more like 35 -40:1 so with a fuel mixture of about 100:1 plus the injection and the slightly rich jetting (reeds) it ran nice and smooth and cool. Since I changed the plug almost every month I don't think I ever fouled one on the trial unless it was while starting it and choked it when i did not need to.
