Do not get me wrong I think that the displacement war is cool. What in the world could some one NEED that many cc's for.I think that the cc war is related to the present demand for SUVs.Manufacturers are making a killing (atv and auto) by selling the the "outdoor experience" (or the pseudo "outdoor experience" ) How many of these SUVs do you think actually see off road conditions. How many of these monster atvs actually are needed.Looks like "mines bigger than yours"is in Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word .

Simple.......POWER!!

Example 1.....

April of 2001..a tornado went right over our store. It didn't touch down, but blew over a dozen quads into a ravine near the store's property line and did alot of damage to our store front. The ravine was about 10' deep and had over 4' of water in it.

During the cleanup that evening, came the task of getting the quads out of the creek. There was chaos all over town so getting a wrecker out there was out of the question.

We tried pulling the quads out with employee vehicles, but the pavement was to slick. Also, we didn't have the first quad with a winch on it on display.[It was February]. We tried every quad available to get them out....and only ther Prairie 650 would do it. Pulled out every single one.

I'm not much of a utility ATV guy, so I know this story is lame, but the first time that we found the extra power to be really neccessary.

Example 2.......

Last summer, a Chevy Blazer had an accident in front of our store. The guy was OK, but the ditch he landed in was muddy and he was stuck. Did we call a wrecker?? Nope. Just got out the demo Prairie 650 and yanked her right out. You wouldn't have done that with the TRX300 and probally not a 450 Foreman either.

I know these examples don't relate to actual outdoor riding, but for work purposes.....the big bores are sometimes the only way.

Besides,...we saved the Blazer guy a $75.00 tow bill........LOL

Once again "POWER"!!

I do nothing but straight line drags where cc plays a big role. The role of displacement is part of the determining factor in how fast I get from point A to point B.

Perhaps the question you should be asking is how many people do you see trying to ride way more quad than their skill or experience can handle. Ive witnessed this on many occasions at the dunes and local riding areas. guys showing off wrecking into trees and others. Those are the types that dont need to mod their machines and should probably find another machine with less cc`s to learn to ride on. Most of the time if ya ask em why did ya buy a raptor or whatever they say because thats the in thing and i have to have one even though its too much machine.

Power and the experienced= lots of entertainment
powerand the unexperienced= lots of doctor bills and your name in the local news.

Atving is coming back, and is probably gonna pass its pinnacle of the late 80's early 90's.I just hope that it does not die off like it did.I am not b*thching about huge engines,I just do not wanna see a few idiots ruin it for eveyone by do something a machine is not intended for.Like three wheelers, they were fine as long as you respected thier handling traits, but a few people must have been dumb, and we all know what what happened.I know it is pointless,I am just thinking out loud.(or something like that)

I don't think we'll be seeing much bigger quads in the sports catagory.

You don't need just more CC's to go faster or have more HP, Once they start using the higher tech engines in quads there won't be any reason to go with larger CC's for a while.

Example a stock CRF450R puts out more HP than most modified 660 Raptors.
All we need to have happen is the manufactures to use these engines in their quads.

But like Knowsalots post proved utility quads need those extra CC's to get that low rpm torque.
With the right engine you don't need huge CC's in a high reving sports quad.

it's not how big, it's how you ride, this past weekend i was riding and this smart a$$ kid saw me jumping, riding on 2wheels, etc on my blaster, so he thought he'd give it a try on his daddy-bought brand new shiny raptor. well he ate s#!t and we laughed about it all day. I hate to see killer quads go to waste with inexperienced riders while us poor boys ride our cheap toys.

-the kid out!
