Oiling Air Filter
#2
not oiling the filter won't hurt it, it may dry out faster and become brittle. Oiling it just basically makes it sticky and more efficiant so it will keep out dust better. I've always used the UNI brand of oil it's one of the cheapest a 16oz bottle for $4.99

Unless your only concern would be to trap rocks or small birds, an un-oiled filter would be pretty much worthless
I have used either Uni or Maxima spray-on filter oil for years...much easier to apply without over oiling the filter. Maxima filter cleaner is also a great way to clean your foam filter. It's water soluble and can be rinsed off right in the kitchen sink with no stain or mess.

I've always used "No Toil" air filter oil(hey that rymes). I just apply it according to the instruction on the back. It is pretty messy to put on(unless you wear gloves) and is a BIG pain in the butt to wash off of your hands. As other people have stated, it is a bad idea to run the filter with no oil. My friend ran his blaster with no oil on the filter for a while. When we took the filter off, there was a thick layer of dust and grit lining the passageway to the carb.
