raptor and predator engine question...VIP!!
please take the time to read this post: thanks
ive been in love with the raptor since day one and my time is soon coming to actually go and buy a new quad. All those other quads came out but i stuck with loving the raptor. The predator came out and looked enticing but since it is the first year production of it this year and their first clutch quad i felt that the first year was going to be a "bug" removing year where all the mistakes were worked out. Which in all fairness to pooplaris is normal for the first year. Plus it didnt have reverse! but i could get over that.
IT all clhanged when my friends dad was telling me why he swears about polaris. He says that their engines are made of cast iron which wont expand and contract. The raptor is aluminum engine. He says although lighter...if your riding and his some cold water, it could cause the engine to get screwed up because of the aluminum expanding and contracting and cause the pistons to buckle and all kinds of stuff. HE also told me that they were sealed in such a way that if u had snorkel exhaust u could go under 4 feet of water. Now i dont know if he knows what hes talking about but can someone please clarify this. although not having reverse sucks, if the cast iron engine is better, than the good far outweighs the bad....even the bad of it being a first year.
Please guys, let me know what the real deal is. Set me straight...i love the raptor but i dont wanna have to worry about the engine getting screwed up from contracting or something
thanks, mike

warrior86,
Don't listen to your friend's dad-- he may think that he knows what he is talking about, but he definitely does NOT...
I think what he was alluding to with the cold water on hot engine is "shock cooling". This can be an issue with some air-cooled engine designs, but it rarely is ever an issue with liquid-cooled motors (the jacketing of fluid around the cylinder helps insulate and stabilize the temperature). Now I don't want to get into all the specifics about thermal affects and heat transfer issues with internal combustion engine design, so please just trust me on this. If you still need more explaination, just PM me.
Also, the Predator engine is an aluminum design, too, FYI...
Enjoy your Raptor...

Stock for stock the Poolaris will handle better.
But if you plan on opening the Raptor up by way of mods, you wont be sorry.
Ask yourself this "Have you been happy with your warrior?"
if YES, then stick with Yammie
Oh yes......That guy must have brown stuff all over his face from all the crap he is talking!!
