Are you not supposed to put a Raptor in Reverse?
I can't find the post but I read that you have a better chance of saving and 01 Raptor Tranny if you don't use reverse. I am thinking about buying a Raptor and wondered should I do the same with a newer model. Because if that is the case I should also look into the Predator and 400ex with some mods for as cheap the 400ex's are going for around here. That is one of the reasons I am looking at the Raptor because of the reverse option.

I have had my 2001 Raptor since April 2001 and use reverse constantly every time I ride which is almost weekly. Never had a problem. I think some of the people don't know how to use the tranny. Never shift into or out of reverse when the quad is moving, even slightly. I think that is possibly one reason for a problem with reverse. Altho I have had no tranny problems thus far, The 2002 & 2003 models do have somewhat improved ( changed?) gearing.

I had my 2001 tranny fail, and I updated it myself with 2002 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears.
The problem has absolutely nothing to do with using, or not using reverse. It is a design shortcoming with how the gears engage each other.
What will increase the likelyhood of a problem is missing second gear under high load conditions.

Yes, I run Bandit XC's all around and have run them for over five years..not the same ones I ran them on a Warrior four years. Wouldn't run anything else for hard pack & baseball sized rock in AZ, The fronts go where you point them with no understeer or rollover. The rears hook up like a sling shot.

Bandits also go wherever you dont point them, I dont recommend them at all. They are too square and grab on roots and rocks. They also like to climb out the side of ruts or up embankments along the trail.
I think the problem is a mix of reverse, 3 dogs, and weak shift fork.. You should see my 4th gear wheel Teh crown broke off allmost 2/3 of the way around the gear, I just pulled it today.
