Space Shuttle

There are orders out in my city that if we find anything dont touch it because the radioactivity could kill you very quickly. The sad part this is the only time the news even mentions our space program any more.

A sad day for USA and Israel,I heard the news on the way to the shooting range for

Maybe we should step up and have some intrest in the space program. Its been so long since ive even heard them say one was taking off. This is our future we need to be worried about it and not Saddam but whipe, kill him and get on with stuff. Its the peoples fault though. If the people expressed intrest I bet there would be a lunar colony by now. We did lose some great people. As for the saftey of our shuddles though, I would rather jump in one than a new york cab any day.
You people show some friggen intrest when something other than when a tradgedy happens. Kinda like the people who only look on either side of the road when theres a wreck.
*slips on soap box* OUCH!

727Banshee, comparing the space shuttle design to commercial aviation is like comparing apples to oranges, not the same thing. Life cycles are different, enviroments are different, systems, etc, etc. I guess that is a minor point, but space systems are a totally different mind-set. I would be damn scared to have Boeing build the 2nd gen RLV!!!
bombrider, the 2+ billion dollor cost for building the shuttle most likely is the fly-away cost, which includes engineering and development costs spread out over the 5 shuttle production run. The B-2 bomber actually has about the same fly-away cost as a shuttle, which is why we have so few of them. Kind of makes you scratch your head and wonder about priorities of the government.
NASA is supposed to have it's aero and astro research funding doubled over the next 5 years, hopefully this will expidite a replacement design for the shuttle. Don't get me wrong, I think that the shuttle is an awesome feat of engineering and determination, but it is time for newer, cheaper, safer, faster RLVs. This tragedy will thrust the issue to center stage.
just my $.02 on the whole thing
