I just bought a 01 yamaha raptor from a local dealership and i heard about a few problems that the 01s had.
could you guys list all of the problems that occur on the 01 raptors and if it happens to all of them or just some?
I would really appreciate it.

Many problems with the 01's was the tranny. There are still many riders on the forum that haven't had a problem with their tranny. What owners have been doing is swapping out the tranny's for the updated '02 parts. Since you bought it from a dealer, does it have some kind of warranty? That would be helpful if anything goes wrong. Good Luck.

Don't get to worried, I just sold my 01 and it never had any problems other than a broken choke cable. I was told by a friend that is a yamaha mechanic that only some of the trannies are going to have problems but the fact that a kid owned it would worry me more than anything. My number 1 rule is if anyone under 20 has owned it stay away (nothing personal)!!!!!!!!! But you certainly stole it for $3700 you could afford to redo the tranny for that price, take it back and say you want a new 2nd gear put in it or else you want you $ back I am sure they will work with you if you just got it would be cheaper than waiting for it to go out then it will cost you.

My sisters boyfriend broke my 01 tranny, what happens is (most of the time) the dogs on 2nd gear give away, 2nd gear will either skip, because its missing a dog, or just plane not work (because all 3 of them broke). If this happens you will hear tittle pieces of metal jingling around, the key is to stop it and not run it at all! If you run it after (like my sisters boyfriend did) you will need to replace the tranny, about 8 bearings, bore the cylender, new piston, maybe replace the clutch (if something got in it), and god forbid after all that you will need to change the oil. It will save you a thousand bucks if you avoided this and bought a 2002 tranny, 2nd gear has 4 dogs, and there are some other changes. Now some people have managed to live with the 2001 tranny fine, but i didnt. If you dont replace it and it breaks, stop right when something is fishy, it will save you 5 bearings and a piston and bore. If it were me id upgrade the tranny just to be safe.

OK the kid that owned it was over 20. he is 24 to be exact he took good care of the bike he hardly rode it because he was always ridin his crotchrocket and he ended up tradin the raptor and crotchrocket in for a new yzf-r1. he said the only thing he had to fix the choke cable. i have a few more ? for you guys how much would it cost to put another 01 gears and dog in it or whatever i need and how much for an 02. another quick question when i start the bike cold the oil filter makes a tapping noise till it gets warm then it stops till i start it up cold again?
