Hello, I was wandering if anyone has repacked their silencers, and if so what is the benefit of doing so. I have toomey pipes/silencers, and I have been running them for about a year now. any suggestions/info would be appreciated. thanks.

Keeping your Toomey silencers packed will keep the sound levels down. I have Toomeys also, and I can tell immediately when that last bit of packing blows out. Much louder. Plus, the packing creates just the right amount of back pressure the engine needs to create horsepower. Many people believe that having no packing makes more horsepower. This is not correct, just loud! Please keep those silencers packed tightly.

Hope this helps.

I repack mine at about every 15 to 20 hours. That is just perfect on mine but I have FMF Powercore2 so I don't know if the Toomeys are different. Check them out and come up with your own maintnance schedual you WILL notice a difference.

I agree, about 20 hours. I usually repack every spring, while doing a complete check of my Banshee, and completing spring maintenance. It really depends on how much you ride, and how your engine is running. A leaner engine is hotter, so I think this would burn packing faster.

Rich jetting will also mat down the packing. Head gasket leaks too.

A blown out silencer will effectively make the rest of the pipe "think" it is a different tuned length than it is.

Sound issues are very important, the Oregon Dune Nat. Rec. Area has a limit of 93 Db, and they are looking to lower it. It's tough to build a motor and have it be quiet too. So please be responsible and keep your sound down by repacking often. Packing is cheap, losing riding areas forever sucks....OK, soap box put away...

Good point! Silver Lake Dunes in Michigan now has the authority to write tickets for excessive noise. I believe the levels are the same as Oregon. This is for our own good, to keep these most excellent dune areas open for us! repack!
