Shoulder Surgery
It is a bummer.....I lived with two bad shoulders for several years. The longer between episodes the better it will be, but it will never be the same.
My left one used to just pop out in my sleep and the right one would pinch a nerve and cause several hours of pain every time I used it for throwing or playing golf.
The doctor gave me two options.....
1. Build up the muscle to help prevent it from popping out and stop doing anything that can injure it. (No snowboarding, softball, quad riding, wakeboarding, golfing, ECT)
2. Get it fixed with surgery
I got the right one fixed last year. Basically they went in and stitched down a small tear and then stretched the tendons and pinned them to the bone. I was supposed to be down for a month and avoid the above activities for 6 months. I started PT after a month and it only took about three to get back full use (not full strength).
I'm thinking of doing the left one this year.
Where do you live? You should seek out a doctor that has a great deal of sports medicine experience. I used the Avalanche surgeon...I had to schedule around the playoffs but I feel it was well worth the aggravation.
FYI...I was back on the track doing 40 footers 5 weeks after surgery, I just couldn't ride for more then 5 minutes or so....Bill

Shoulder Surgery
Roost,
I will try and dig up the exercise sheet the PT gave me and scan a copy and send you.
Most of the exercises was with low weight at first if I remember corectly they were
1. Shrugs - Hold ing the weight by your side and rolling your shoulder in a circular patteren.
2. Forward Arm Raises - Holding weight in hand with thumbs facing inward raise the weight up in front of you parallal with floor. Also do it with thumbs facing forward.
3. Side Arm Raises - Holding weight in hand with thumbs facing forward raise the weight up to your side parallal to the floor.
Those are pretty good shoulder exercises.

You may start with ponies and work up to grandes
Once at grande you should be feeling pretty good.

Shoulder Surgery
I had a torn rotator cuff and elected not to get cut on. The best exercise I did to get strength and motion was hold a large ball, lightweight to start, against a wall with the palm of my hand and "write" the ABC's. This was given to me by a sports therapist who said it will be a slow recovery but it will work. A little over a year later it was as good as new( that's back to full strength) Good luck......
