I have a 94 Banshee. At the end of my last dune trip, I noticed a hairy tick sound in the motor. I shut it down and have since tore it apart.

Come to find out I lost a chunk of my left piston which resulted in some cylinder wear and the head dinged. Sucks but now I get a cool head and a bore job (if its not to bad). My question is were did the 1/4 in. of piston and ring go. Hopefully out the exhaust? It still ran fine. Do you think it effected the crank and/or rod? Also both rods seemed alittle sloppy. Do they usually have a hair of play?

By the way I blame the failure on problems I've had with foam filters. The stock one let enough sand in to foul the plugs and the Pro Design foam let about 50% less sand in.

well, first of all, you are right -- the foam filter is junk. i just upgraded to the k & n device. secondly, i too have lost bits of piston and/or ring. my guess is that the piece of piston, if it was lost from the piston skirt, is somewhere in the crankcase. if i were you, i think i would tear it apart to find out where everything went. the rods do have some horizontal freeplay -- that is, the piston shold move slightly back and forth on the connecting rod pin -- but it shouldn't move up or down on the pin when pulled. good luck. and btw, is the machine stock?

I have digital pictures to show the damage, but I don't know how to post them in the forum. If anyone is interested reply and I can show them via email. They also show the sand from the foam junk.

you should take your cylinders off and wash out the whole engine, crankcase and all, in case any metal is still in there. I would also like to know where the chunk went!
