That could be a bunch of different things, most of which could be hard to tell unless you know the guy you bought it from. Does it have fresh gas? Try cleaning the carb out. If its not modded then its probably an easy fix.

Hey,

well i do know that it has a DG pipe and muffler. not sure if it has an aftermarket air filter, but it has some large holes cut into the air box. that's all i can say for sure at the moment. i don't think it has any other performance mods. would an exhaust and better air filter require re-jetting? ne way for me to tell what's in there now? mostly i just don't want to run it too lean.

thanks,
bigmac

exhaust and airbox mods do require rejetting. Take a look at your spark plug and see if its been runnin lean. If that aint it, make sure the pilot screw is exactly 2 turns out. It is on the bottom of the carb and really hard to find unless you take the whole carb off.

Just so you know when you check the plug if it's grey I think that means it's lean, if it's black that means it's rich and lastly if it's a tanish brown color it's alright. Pretty sure thats the way you read it. Yeah but clean the carb and check the air filter it may need cleaning too!!

Hey,

1badwarrior - you beat me to my next question. lol

what is the stock jetting? what jetting would you recommend for those mods at sea level?

also, how does the DG pipe compare to other pipes? it might grow on me after i get some riding time, but for the moment it seems a little louder than what i'd like. also, the head pipe isn't fitting very well with the muffler. i can wiggle it a little. how might i fix that?

many thanks,
bigmac

Head pipe part, dunno.... But the stock jetting is 145. Pipe and airbox usually require around 148-150, Not real sure because I never had those exact mods though.

Hey,

i pulled the plug out today. it was black and sooty. so i cleaned it off with a wire brush.

what's the spark gap supposed to be set at? it was at like .015, so i opened it up a little to around .30 or so. from that alone it seems to run a little better.

i took it for a few slow laps around the house. runs pretty smooth once it warms up a little. but the idle is high, even once it warms up. i also noticed that gas was dripping from the tube that comes out of the bottom of the carb, even once i turned the motor off. it appears to be some sort of overflow tube.

so it appears that the carb is getting too much gas, which might explain the high idle, black spark plug, and the dripping. but then there's the question of, what's causeing this and how do i fix it?

thanks,
bigmac

PS: how many grease zerks are there? i've found 10 so far.

PSS: what kind of chain lubricant do you use? the yamaha dealer said they sell a chain wax but it was on order. my riding buddies use a spray lube, PJ i think.
