A little more info would help. Does it roll over normally but doesn't start or is the problem with the electric start?

I had the same problem on my 98 BBSE and it was the actual connections inside the electric start handle bar switch. Dirt and other assorted crud got inside there and the connections weren't making good contact. If you tried to push the starter button it wouldn't go all the way in ... and even when it did the bike still wouldn't turn over. Checked battery connections, battery, solenoid etc. and finally tracked it down to this. A good cleaning with "contact cleaner" and it hasn't acted up since. Maybe check this out and see ... I thought that this was too easy to be the fix, but it was.

Good luck.
