Quote from raptorcam
The camper package comes into play with a load only, it consists of a single leaf overload. I had a F-250 crewcab 4wd and the thing rode exactly the same as every F-250 or F-350 I have ever driven. Hopping from one to the other, I could not tell the difference. So, if someone were going to buy a fullsize Ford, go with the 1 ton, the extra 1100 pounds of legal payload is a nice option.

I don't know I drove three or four in one day and the one without the camper package rode noticably nicer. And the stiffness seemed to be more of the front suspension than the rear. Maybe it's just psycological.

Go get a Dodge cummins turbo diesel. If you wanted you could just buy an older one for cheap and then just drive the ranger for everything but pulling your trailer if you wanted. My dad has a 98 cummins turbo diesel 2500 5spd 4wd with 3:55 gears completley stock with 537 foot/pounds of torque. He also gets 20mpg almost all year around, and it pulls great too. You could take off in 3rd gear giving it NO throttle if you wanted to.

Yeah the torque of Diesels and the mileage can't be beat by any gas motor. My dad has a '00 Ford F250 4x4 w/ 7.3 Powerstroke, it has big *****. I love driving that thing you can bog it down and just hit it and it recovers like nothing. My grandpa has a '99 3500 Dodge Cummins, believe it or not I like it better that the Powerstroke.. The cummins is Manual I think that makes it easier to pull and it does pull better than the Powerstroke in the long run. Just last year we were helping friends pull their 18" Searay boat out of the water for winter and we backed the Cummins up to a very steep dock and with the boat on the tralior I put it in first and let off the clutch not even touching the gas and it walked it.

I have a 99 GMC Highrider (Zr2) 4.3 and the 4L60 trany (great trany). It does great pulling my trailer (open) with three quads and camping gear. But when I pull my boat (21 foot party barge) it really sucks the power right out. I would say sale your enclosed trailer and get an open one.
All the mods in the world won't give you what you want.
Until you get the right trailer or the right truck use some octane booster when you know you will be towing.

That's the whole thing there, transmissions make a huge difference. The automatic is basically a hydraulic pump driven by the motor and doesnt have any direct mechanical linkage like the manual. The manual transmission will always put more power to the ground. Ford's new auto transmission for the 6.0 does however feel pretty impressive. Unfortunately these solutions to the Ranger not having enough power are getting more expensive each reply I'd just buy the old rig with a big honkin V8 to tow the trailer and keep the Ranger as the daily driver.

How does a '99 and newer Ford F-150 with 5.4 V-8 do for gas mileage compaired to a '99 and newer Chevy with a 5.3 V-8? A budy of mine has a '99 Chevy with 5.3 and gets about 15-16 mpg, this is about average right?

And about power....the Chevy has more HP but the Ford has more torque? Looking for a differnt truck now guys.....thanks for the all the info.

I pull about 2000lbs with a 2001 Ford Expedition 2wd with the 5.4 and get about 12-13mpg (same as with no load). This is with 3.55 gears and an open trailer. This should be pretty close to the F-150, they are basically the same unit.

Dang, I get 13-14.5 out of my V10 F350 supercab 4x4. My wife's expedition 4x4 gets about 17 hwy around 15 towing a flatbed trailer 3500lbs. The Expo has the little 4.6 V8.

Well, traded the Ranger in on a '99 Chevy Silverado 4X4 extended cab with 5.3 V-8. This engine has almost twice the HP as my 4.0 V-6 in the Ranger so it should have enought power to pull anything that I need to pull. The only thing I wish it had was the fourth door, year 2000 and newer.
