DS650 pouring gas from crank case breather...
I have a 2000 ds650, that i bought years ago for around 700 bucks from a good friend, i just kinda bought it and parked it as this quad isnt my thing, im sure it has its good place in the dunes, but in the northest not so much.
the problem i am having is that the quad is litterly pouring gas out of the crank case breather when i try to start it, however the insane thing about this problem is the intake side of the engine has no gas residue in it hence how is gas getting into the engine? im assumeing i just cant see it and it is being sprayed in. i am not a newb with carbs by any means, but this one is boggling me, it seems like there is a ton of negative pressure inside the engine and it is almost pulling gas into the engine as fast as the fuel line will supply, i am kind of leaning towards the float being stuck open, has anyone had anything like this happen to them?
thank you. v581

nah its not the float, but gas is surely pouring into the engine, the bike ran fine but just sat for some time, the engine hardly has any hours on it and the rings are in good shape, just an fyi because some people say gas will seap by the rings if one is broken. i am leaning towards bad seals in the needle seat, where gas is litterly flowing by the o-rings regardless of needle position, also the carb leaks gas from the bottom where the bowl overflow is, (same spot as the fuel drain) so i know the float is adjusted incorrectly most likely to the point where it is just always open.

The float needle rests in a float body.
This float body has a o-ring near the bottom.
With carb off the quad, remove float assembly.
There is a set screw holding this body in place. Remove screw.
Spray some wd-40 on the outside.
You will need a skinny hook to pull this body out.
Remove o-ring and measure diameter, I think it is 2mm or .080".
Check with auto parts for simular diameter, size or alittle smaller. They stretch.
Or go to a atv dealer.
Replace and add wd-40 again.
Use a circular pressing motion to get the o-ring to start.
Press all the way down and install lock screw.
Replace float assemble, with float at OMR specs.

thanks for the reply omr, i did you mods awhile back! you have some good ideas man. but i took the carb apart and the o-rings were all shot, so shot in fact that the needle body i can actually wiggle around in the carb, i am going to go ahead and replace all the o-rings while im doing it, and go through the bike. thanks again though.

just thought id leave this one for the search, replaced the o-rings on the needle seat, and the problem was fixed! bike runs so smooth and strong now, i would reccomend to anyone with an older ds to go through the carb and replace the gaskets and o-rings and rebuild the carb, clean it and set the float the bike just all around runs 1000 times better and coupled with the carb mods its nite and day from stock.

Thank You
Found this site looking for help for my 2001 ds650 carb prob - leaking carb -gas in oil. Read this thread - thanks to all of you that contributed. I feel like someone else feels my pain. I'm taking to the shop. Some day I hope to be able to perform the work you all seem do on your own bikes. Thanks again. You all are a great group of people.
