Strut/hub rebuild

Strut/hub rebuild
Hello,i recently aquired a 2000 sportsman 500 in pretty good conditon except the left strut bearings are shot along with the coil for the clutch. The hilliard clutch itself is shot along with the hub bearings and armature plate. Im thinking it would b cheaper to buy a used strut/hub than try to rebuild these. What year/model strut and hub are interchangeable? Thanx!

I wouldn't buy a used strut as you could get one in worse shape than the one you have! If the inner pole on the strut body itself where the coil goes on is ground down the strut will need to be replaced anyway. The reason being is that it wouldn't hold the armature plate securely enough even if you replaced the coil and coil sleeve. Look over the strut carefully around the coil area and even remove the coil if you have to so you can inspect the strut inner pole. I learned the hard way myself years ago trying to rebuild a strut with a damage inner pole. A new strut assembly comes with the coil and sleeve along with a new ball joint. You would still have to replace the bearings, hilliard, armature plates also. A new coil and sleeve is about $90 versus about $300 for a complete strut assembly. If you decide to rebuild it or want a new one, this is about as cheap a place as any online.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Hello OPT thanx for the advice! The strut is a mess, the the coil area is roughed up and the coil sleeve had a pretty bad gouge. The inner pole doesnt look to good either. Think Im gonna bite the bullet and buy the complete strut assembly at cycle parts warehouse. Is the part to order for the left side 2201311?

The new strut will already have one installed If for some reason it doesn't,just find a socket the same size as the seal and tap it in. Don't go too far in or the seal will get distorted and wont seal against the cv joint properly and leak. Use the old strut as a reference. Torque the hub nut to 12 foot pounds. OPT

Not sure of this but the strut setup of all Hillary types from many years and model maybe the same.
My Cousin has a 2000 4x4 500 Scrambler, and he bought the whole strut with hub and all for $50 off of a 500 Sportsman from ebay and it was a straight forward bolt on swap. I forget the year of the Sportsman but it was different from his Scrambler's.
There was a 1999 Magnum 325 4X4 parked next to my 2001 500 Sportsman and the whole front end looked to be the exsact same thing. The MacPherson strut, 6.7" travel was put on most all 4x4 Polaris ATVs with the locking hub hillary. Some older models had the MacPherson strut, 6.25" as well.
Here is a good link to tell you which make and model has your strut. Just set in the year and model and look at suspention travel. 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O. ATVs
In 2005 some ATVs (Not All) had the longer MacPherson strut with 8.2 in. but they had the centralized diff Hillary and would be no use to you anyways.
