Cross-referencing Yamaha filters?
#1
Can you cross-reference these oil filters to another brand? Such as Fram, Purolator, etc. I just paid $13.00 for a 2001 Kodiak oil filter (only quad store in town). $13.00 for a filter is a bunch of crap! There's no way this filter is better in quality than the ones the experts make for $3.00. Yamaha is into off-road technology, not filter technology. If I'm wrong here, someone set me straight. Thanks.

Bucky,
I should send you 26 bucks and you can buy me 2 for my 2000 Kodiak. The dealer up in Mass. is getting $19 for one. Look through the forum and you'll find guys that claim they found an aftermarket filter although their OEM Yamaha numbers do not match the Yamaha 5GH-13440-00 on the Kodiak filter. I'll be right in line with you to buy an aftermarket filter, but until I see the OEM number cross referenced, the high cost of the OEM filter may be cheap insurance. Kodiak's seem to be getting popular--someone will make a filter soon. Love my Kodiak though. P.S. How's your brake pads? I replaced all 3 sets after 2 months.

Frano,
I have 100 miles on my 2001 and they are doing fine. I think they worked on this problem after customers' experiences with the 2000 model year. I hope that's true. How much was it to replace, in case I need to in the future?
And to everyone else, thanks for the leads on the filters.

Bucky,
The OEM brake pads are about $29/set. The rears are different from the fronts are all are easy to install yourself, as I did. I hope you're right about the 2001 and so far, all of the complaints I've heard are on the 2000's. If anyone knows of a change between the two years, please let us know. Thanks.

I had to replace my rear brake pads on 2001 "BLUE" Kodiak after 300 km's, The set I put in have lasted over 1000 km's and there appears to be at least half of the pad left. The front pads are also in good shape. The only other problems I have incountered with the machine are squeaky front shock mounts (a little water proof grease solved that problem) and loose mounting bolts on the front part of the skid plate! Overall an awesome machine!
