Default Is it normal for a 1997 Yamaha Blaster to have a bit of a engine knock?

Hi there. I have a question about Yamaha Blasters. I am a total noob with 4 wheelers and I just bought a 1997 Blaster. It runs really good and starts right up. It's fast and doesn't vibrate but it does sound like an engine knock at idle. Not really really loud but loud enough to notice.

Is this normal for a blaster or is something wrong with it?
I heard that this is normal for blasters???

Thanks for the help.

Use a higher oct. Gas. Like: Super/ premium. If it dosent improve, go to your local shop ( purchase a service manual for your make and model, and adjust your valves yourself its not that hard, and you really should teach yourself to be able to fix it yourself anyway. Also change the oil and the oil filter. You should be fine after that.

The Blaster is a two stroke. No valves. These other guys are messing with you. There are no valves to adjust, and no motor oil or filter to change.

What you may be hearing is piston slap. I would take it in to your dealer, or repair shop. It will be much cheaper to repair now that if you catch a ring on a port and tear up a cylinder.

Hi. I took it to my friend and he looked at it and did a bit of tuning and put a bit more oil in it. I am also going to try higher octane fuel but it is doing alot better now.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will do a tune up soon and report back if it has other issues.

Thanks again.

I think that's what I did. Heard the 2 stroke sound and panicked a bit. A couple friends listened to it and says it's fine so I think it's ok.

Thanks again.

You are probably hearing piston slap it is normal when a 2 stroke piston is showing wear and it is a good indication on when to replace your piston and rings I would check with your local shop and find out how much compression you should have on a stock blaster and do a compression test and see where you are at it is a great way to see how your top end is doing after a rebuild you can test it new and then have something to go by as far as wear. It is cheap to do a top end on a 2 stroke but if it comes apart it get's real expensive real quick. Hope this helps you out.

a stock blaster should have 140-160psi for compression
