Bmx atv wont stay running
#1
I cant get my sons atv to stay running. I had my old son clean the carb and said it wasnt dirty. But if i spray carb cleaner into the carb it will fire up then die. its like its getting no gas. I removed the gas line and gas is getting through, any ideas?

If it will startup on carb cleaner then there is a fuel delivery problem. If the fuel flow from the fuel shutoff valve is good then I would reclean the carb really good. Since you didn't state a size on this atv, if it's a 2 stroke then check the reed valve assembly.

Most, if not all Chinese quads are 4 strokes. Most have the PZ 19-30mm carbs, some have the Mikuni Carbs. Either way these carbs are jetted with a Main and a pilot jet. Both Jets are small compared to jets found in Hondas, etc. so they clog easily.
Remove the brass jets in the carb and make sure they are clear and that you can see light through them. The main jet can clog, but is usually clear. This is why most quads will run fine at higher RPMs but not run well at lower RPMs. The pilot jet is the small on and it is very easily clogged. I use a small dremel sized drill bit to clean them out.
I have found that over time, it is just easier to replace the ENTIRE carburetor as most of them cost less than $35.00. Your description of your problem is indicative of a clogged pilot jet.
