How do I bleed rear brakes?
#1
Rear brake caliper came off of my daughter's 110cc TaoTao atv. I reinstalled the caliper but now my foot pedal goes to the floor. I have tried numerous times to bleed the brakes, but get no fluid out of the bleeder valve when pumping the foot pedal. I see no leaks coming from the master cylinder when putting brake fluid back in.
Side note: Local guy that works on these tells me it's def. air in the line and says it a peculiar way to bleed the line. Of course he tells me to bring it in and for the low cost of $30 he'll do it form me.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Frogger I would say that there is air in the line as well. if you put a peice clear gas line on the bleeder screw and leave the screw open wile pumping the brakes you will see bubbles in the tube (be sure to keep the fluid topped up in the master) keep adding fluid till the fluid in the clear tube has little or no bubbles at this point you should close the bleeder screw and begine bleeding as you normally would (pump the pedal a few times hold down open the bleeder to let any air bubble out and before letting the pedal back up close the screw)
hope this helps

Few more questions. I'm new to this as you can tell.
1. Do you leave the cap on the master cylinder when pumping or does it matter?
2. I have pumped the brakes hundreds of times and I get nothing out of it? Would you still recommend the above advice?
3. Just curious, but what purpose does the clear tube serve? I understand the visual part but does it facilitate in some way the movement of fluid thru the line?
4. As for question #2 I top the fluid off but the level never goes down.
Thanks bigair

ok seems you have ALOT of air in the line..
this is gonna be messy take the line off of the caliper and pull out the bolt from the banjo connection the fluid should start to leak out pump and fill till you have fluid in the line reconnect and start the above again.. oh the clear tube is more for a visual and helps to keep the fluid contained in a jar or can

yes thats the bolt. in some cases I have had to remove the caliper and lines so I could elevate the caliper above master (this helps as the air bubbles want to rise in the lines, if the master is above the caliper the opposite wants to happen)

I,m amazed a 110 Chinese ATV would even have hydraulic back brakes, not just a simple cable operated brake.
Even a large new expensive Honda 500 Foreman 4x4 does not have hydraulic rear brakes, just cable to drum brakes.
