I put in a brand new motor in our 2005 Yamoto 200cc atv. The new motor looks identical to our old one, other than the fact that it has a kick start as well as electric start. After installing the engine, I quickly got it to start.

However, I can't seem to get it into reverse. I started it in neutral (the green "N" light turned on) and was able to kick down into the forward gears. But, I am not able to kick up past neutral. On the old engine this is where reverse was located.

Is there any trick to get it to go into reverse?

Im thinking that if it has a kick starter, it may be the motorcycle engine..If you,ve got 5 forward gears.. you dont have reverse.

 

Thanks. I thought when I bought the engine, they said it had reverse. I do have the kickstart, though, so you are probably right. Do you think it would be possible to put the old transmission in the new engine so I get both the kick start and reverse

 

Your Welcome... Ive never done it but Id think if you had all the pieces.. Gears..shims..shift drum.. you could get it to work..
