Starter Problems on a 110cc quad
#1
I got this quad from a friend. Needed a battery, a coil wire and a plug, otherwise was good, but had been sitting in his barn for over a year. I had it running fairly well, but it wouldnt really idle, then it bounced to stalling when I was giving it gas, but finally got it to run pretty smooth "most" of the time. Then the problem occurred.
When trying to fine tune the carb it got to the point where the starter didnt want to turn the motor any more and was quite warm to the touch, so I'm wondering if I smoked the starter. I let it sit and cool for a few hours, but when I tried it again it did the same thing. occasionally it would turn the motor 2 or 3 times before getting hung again. Good news is I have another quad that I got for nothing that I may have to harvest parts from, however that quad is for my other son so they dont have to share one, so I would rather not use it as a parts machine.
Any ideas and where can I get a new starter if need be?

I have no idea what brand it is, I got it for free from a friend of mine.
I went out this morning and messed with it and it almost sounds like there isnt enough juice to the battery, however there is 12.2 volts going to it. I also tried jumping the selinoid with a screw driver and even put the power directly to the starter to eliminate a wiring issue.
I started it a bunch yesterday trying to get it running right which is why I am thinking that I may have toasted the starter. This morning it did the same thing, turn a few times, then click like it was trying to engage, then turn the motor a half a time, then a couple times but never fast enough or long enough to actually turn the motor over.

ok, don't wire it directly-that's bad. BUT, do this: again, measure the voltage on the battery before cranking, then measure the battery's voltage while cranking and see what the battery is doing. the starter may be dragging or going bad and pulling the battery down to where it won't do much. if you don't have a jump box, you could jump the battery like a normal vehicle and see what the starter does. you could also pull the starter off and test it like a normal vehicle battery. are the cells of the battery full of the acid/water mix? trying to eliminate a dry/weak cell here.

I had been jumping it off my truck before i got the new battery yesterday and thats when it started acting up. I have some running to do today so i will mess with it later and follow your instructions and let you know the results.

the battery is brand new as of Wednesday.

So I have determined that it was the starter. I took the other starter of the other bike and what do you know, fired right up, even got it to idle like a champ. Took 2 laps around the house, she stalled out and now wont idle....
i know its in the carb, but what happened?

possibly sucked up some solids into the jets and plugged them off or the float needle valve is stuck closed and no gasoline is making it to the float bowl for the jets to feed the piston. probably take it off and give it a thorough cleaning. jets, float, needle valve, the whole nine yards. you'd be surprised how far a quad can run on just what's in the bowl. don't forget to clean the orifices on the jets real good and the inside of them too!.
