Redcat Mpx-150 voltage regulator ?
#1
Hello all I've owned a Redcat 150 for about two years now my kids love it and it's fairly easy to work on. Now for my problem it was running great all summer then it quit so when we tried to restart it the voltage regulator smoked out of the back of the unit. So I removed it ordered a new one and a new stator. Now I'm kind of leery about putting the new regulator on and frying it too. What should I look for to make sure its not going to fry the new reg? Also would it be wise to replace the stator at the same time even tho I don't think it's suspect. Thanx.

The most common cause of failure for 150cc rectifiers is not having the proper value fuse installed (or no fuse at all), and then plugging the battery in backwards. Do you have a fuse installed? What is the value of that fuse?
The stator really doesn't have any ability to cook the regulator by any scenario I can think of, and loading the output side of the regulator can't do that either. Excess loads to the 12 volt bus just get passed over to the battery and it takes over from there.
I can see how random failures "inside" the regulator could cause it to smoke (in which case you just change the regulator), but I don't see how external problems could do this - other than a backwards battery with no (or a too high) fuse value. That will do major damage in a flash.

Happy to report the Redcat is alive again. Replaced the regulator and got a new battery and it fired right up. I did check all the wiring out and didn't find anything that would have caused the initial problem. The only thing I could think of is that a couple of times when it sat for a while is I did jump start it with my truck that probably caused the regulator to possibly go bad. Won't be doing that again! Kids are happy again just wish it was warmer. Thanx for the help.
