Your wording is confusing which of these do you mean?
1)I had my cdi off the bike and when I reinstalled it poof it faild spectacularly
2) My original cdi just quit working all of a sudden and when I replaced it the new one faild spectacularly.
3) I tried replacing my stock cdi with a performance part and the new part was an epic fail.
3 is probably due to wrong part (ie. DC cdi on a bike that shoulda been AC)
1 is probably a grounded wire somewhere
2 is a f!@#ing headache but needs resolved

How many pins on cdi? If it is a six pin (will have a square connector with 4 and another connector with 2 beside it) then LynnEdwards has a good way to check if is AC or DC. He went over the process in the how to diagnose stator stickey at the top of the forum.
