TaoTao 150 quad - fuel flow from petcock
#1
I've seen a few similar threads, but I think I've already tried what I've seen so far. My 150cc TaoTao has new gas, new fuel filter and lines, and a new carburetor, but still starts and idles (for a while at least), but then stalls when the throttle is pushed. It sure seems like it's not getting enough fuel. How fast should the fuel come out of the vacuum petcock when running? That's about the only thing I can think of fuel related that hasn't been replaced.

I'm not familiar with the 150, in fact have just fixed my first Tao Tao tidlder, they are nowhere near as popular in the UK as in the US. If fuel is flowing, rather than dripping, from the pipe when running, it will be supplying enough. It is surprising how long a bike will run on just a float bowl full of fuel. Your new carb may not be set to give the right air/fuel mixture, or float level too low (if adjustable). One cause can be tank breather blocked, see if slackening the filler cap is an instant cure. With vac operated taps you can get faulty taps or vac lines. If the tap has a PRI try leaving it on that when running, and see if that makes any difference. Finally, it could be spark related, fit a new plug, but any ignition component could be failing and causing this problem.

Thanks for your reply and information. It's doing the same thing with the new carb as it did with the old, so don't think it's the carb. I had already ruled out the tank vent as well, and it has a new plug. There only looked to be drips coming out of the petcock, so I ordered a new one since it should be a stream. I'll update what happens once I get the petcock next week.

Check that the vac line is sound, a new tap won't cure it if there is no vacuum to open it. Also, could be blocked, most ATVs have a strainer type filter on the tap, maybe this needing cleaning, you will see once you remove the tap.

I just joined the forum for help on my go cart, and saw your post. This Tao cart wouldn’t flow fuel. I removed the tank and removed the petcock to find it totally clogged with white corrosion. I ran a wire through each end and freed up the fuel flow. I hope this helps.

I just got mine running! Clean carb, getting fuel, good spark, and wouldn’t fire, even with starting fluid. You know what else will keep it from starting? A stuck intake valve! I pulled the adjuster cover, gave it a light tap with a hammer and all’s good.
